3D movies and update

December 30th, 2008 in Random musings | No Comments »

Caught Bolt on 3D at Lido Cinema today. Bringing an additional dimension to movies was a lot of fun. If its reasonably priced (tickets were only $10), I wouldn’t mind watching all of my future movies in 3D. The glasses were not a bother at all … I had them sitting on top of my prescription spectacles.  On another note, Bolt was a good flick. . .

Weight update: 75.5kg
No exercise today . . . . “tapering” . . . . yeah right :)

Technique more important than brut force

December 29th, 2008 in Random musings | No Comments »

I amazingly managed to reduce my 25m timing from 14.2 to 13.2 secs. It’s a remarkable improvement over a single day. The only difference being a day of additional training and focusing on basic freestyle techniques (e.g. stroke and body rotation).

If i can maintain that speed over a full 50m, it would come close to my personal best sub 26 timing. If I recall correctly it was a ~25.8.

Bak Chor Mee Entrepreneurship

Bak Chor Mee stores are located near the Prata store

I stopped by my regular bak chor mee store along upper thomson road today (picture courtesy of www.gothere.sg - use it, its a cool product our friends have developed). Unfortunately I never took the effort to remember the name of the store (but its in red). Now the interesting to note that on this stretch of food stores are two bak chor mee stores. The other immediately to the right of the red store - in blue.

The notable thing that noticed today was that the original “bak chor mee man” (the guy making the noodles) has defected to the blue store. Now I am not sure what happened - if he got fired or decided to become his own boss and take over the blue store (the latter is my guess - to be confirmed) but I thought it was note worthy.

Being the curious chap that I am, I bought two “mee kia bak chor mee’s” home . . . Here are the notable differences.

Red store: Had more minced meat in it. Had a shrimp. $3.50
Blue store: Had a pseudo abalone like thing. $3.00

I’ll come up with a better comparison to be done next time, I didn’t intend to blog about it and was famished so didn’t take the effort to study the two bowls. Also I guess it makes sense to do a “non-tapoed” review of the noodles.

Weight today: 76.2kg
Swim: Apparently did a 14.2 sec split for ~25m, I am pretty happy with it.

Pink slips party anyone?

December 27th, 2008 in News | 2 Comments »

On another note, we are thinking of organizing pink slips parties in 2009. This is where we bring together professionals from our social networks to meet up with our recruiter friends (headhunters and employers) in a casual social setting (i.e. over some drinks at a nice chic bar / club). Who knows what will happen… Find a job? Make some friends? Find a date?

We would like to do a short survey to see if you or your friends would come to such an event. To get on the guest list, please send us an email at admin@vawch.com with:

Your Name
Previous Position and Company
Your Industry
Your Function
# of Guests

We will then contact you with details once we garner enough interest and finalize stuff. Thanks!

Back on track

I went full-on today.  Fish soup for lunch - and I only worked on half a portion of rice and yong tau foo for dinner without polishing off the noodles.

I also managed to finally run after a whole month. My recent bout with illness left me unable to exercise for some time. The timing was pretty poor though, 2.5km in 15 mins.

Did you know that Nokia has this nifty sports tracker? For GPS enabled phones, it uses satellites in the sky to map out where you walked / ran / biked, how far and how fast. It’s really quite cool. Geeky folks like me love stuff like that.

Anyway, I weighed myself in and I’m now 75.2kg. Progress!

Christmas excesses and China’s financial might

December 26th, 2008 in Random musings | No Comments »

In case any of you were wondering (and someone did ask yesterday), it is B who embarking on a ‘leverage reduction’ exercise, although I would benefit from trimming a couple of kg off my frame as well.

Interesting article in the New York times today about Chinese financial institutions seeking recruits from the badly hit US financial sector.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/26/business/worldbusiness/26yuan.html?hp

” The New York event was the last of three stops made by the visiting Chinese delegation, which was made up of recruiters and representatives from more than 27 Chinese financial firms. The delegation, which held events in London and Chicago as part of its global recruiting tour, hoped to fill 170 positions by the end of its trip.”
